Safer Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery Charging

A new, compact charger specially designed by Projecta for Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries that will keep them safer and always ready for use.

The new 12V, 1A Automatic IC100L model Lithium Battery Charger has joined the Projecta’s ‘Intelli-Charge’ battery charger range in New Zealand, developed specifically for use with Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries as well as standard batteries.

The new model is ideally suited to maintaining infrequently used equipment such as motorcycles, jet skis and ride-on mowers.

Some of these products may already come with an OE lithium battery, but in other cases owners, particularly those with motorcycles, may retrofit a lithium battery that can provide them with a weight saving of up to 70%.

Given the unique composition of Lithium Iron Phosphate, it’s recommended that these batteries are charged with a battery charger like the IC100L, which is specifically designed with this battery technology in mind, to avoid damage.

Tim Paterson, National Sales Manager for Griffiths Equipment, which distributes Projecta battery products in New Zealand, says: “If Lithium batteries are not managed appropriately, such as not charged with the correct device, they can easily be damaged through overheating, which can be potentially dangerous.

“The Projecta Intelli-Charge range is specifically designed to ensure that these new technology batteries are safely and effectively charged, without compromise. And it will be better for the battery in the long term.”

The new IC100L, along with the rest of Projecta’s Intelli-Charge Lithium Battery Charger range, utilises a tailored five-stage charging algorithm with two soft starts and lithium-specific voltage levels across the charge cycle. This provides better power density, faster charge times, greater discharge capabilities and inherently safer operation while also extending the life of the battery.

Mr Paterson says that conventional battery chargers are not suitable for use with Lithium batteries, yet the IC100L and broader Intelli-Charge range from Projecta have been designed to charge more traditional WET/AGM and CALC batteries if required, making them very versatile.

The Projecta Intelli-Charge IC100L is sold as a comprehensive kit that includes battery clamps and a fused vehicle harness to provide multiple charging options. The wiring harness is three metres in length, allowing convenient permanent connection to the vehicle and is also polarity protected for safer battery charging and spark-free operation.

The charger also features a three-pin electrical plug that can be used directly with a standard electrical outlet and also includes an L.E.D indicator which advises the charge status or if there is a battery fault.
